Add Pennsylvania to the list of states moving to yank Planned Parenthood's funding: Republican state Rep . Daryl Metcalfe is today bringing legislation, co-written by two pro-life groups, that would knock organizations that offer abortions to the bottom of the pile of those seeking state funding. Metcalfe insists that the Whole Woman’s Health Funding Priority Act shifts taxpayer dimes toward groups that offer a more holistic approach to women's health.
But state and federal funds that Planned Parenthood receives can't legally go toward abortions, so Metcalfe's bill—one of several in play nationwide—is yanking the carpet out from under the rural and under-served populations for which Planned Parenthood is often the only health care game in town, says the Huffington Post. Not so, fires back a rep for one of the pro-life groups backing the bill, calling it an "upgrade." "Instead of going to Planned Parenthood to receive one type of service, they will now be going to qualified health clinics where they can get mammograms, treatment for hypertension and depression, dental care, all these things Planned Parenthood doesn’t provide."
