A shooting last night at an off-campus Auburn University apartment complex has left three dead, including two former Auburn football players, reports the Birmingham News and MSNBC. Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips were both killed after a fight broke out at a pool party and one or two men began shooting indiscriminately; current player Eric Mack was also injured in the shooting, but a source says he'll "be all right." Demario Pitts, 20, of Auburn, also died in the attack.

"It's like I lost a lung," Turquorius Vines tells the AP, adding that his friend was killed after hitting one of the shooters with a bottle. "I don't know how I'm going to survive this." Christian, Phillips, and Mack were all members of Auburn's 2010 recruiting class, but back problems forced Christian to give up the game, while Phillips decided to give up football this spring. Police had earlier cordoned off the complex and shielded the scene from view and drizzling rain as they investigated. A news conference is expected later today. (More Auburn Tigers stories.)
