A harrowing divorce affidavit by RFK Jr. obtained by Newsweek paints a chilling portrait of life with suicidal Mary Kennedy that included physical abuse, repeated suicide threats, stealing from a child from Bobby's previous marriage, and running over the family dog. In addition, Newsweek discovers that Mary was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Among the revelations in Bobby's affidavit:

  • In a "sudden rage" about her husband's continued friendship with ex-wife Emily, Mary, pregnant with the couple's first son, "hit me in the face with her fist," Bobby recounts. "She was a trained boxer and I got a shiner. Her engagement ring crushed my tear duct, causing permanent damage."
  • Kick, Bobby's then-9-year-old daughter from his previous marriage, told her dad in 1997 she was convinced Mary "hated" her, and suspected her stepmom was stealing from her. Bobby defended Mary, but later found several of the missing items hidden in Mary's drawer. Years later he finally realized the "campaign of cruelty and abuse" directed at Kick, reports Newsweek.
  • After the two separated, "Mary ran over and killed the dog, Porcia, in the driveway," Bobby recounts. She had their youngest son "call me to tell me. He was disconsolate and crying. Mary came on the phone. She said I should come over and spend the night in my old room with the kids who were distraught. She said she intended to kill herself unless I called off the divorce." When he showed up the next day she "hit me with a roundhouse punch," then "rained blows down on me," as she screamed he was a "demon" in front of their young son.

The Kennedy housekeeper tells Newsweek that Mary was often drunk, and once passed out cold in the kitchen with her face in a plate of congealed food. After one noisy fight while Bobby was taking a bath, Mary stormed out of the house. Bobby came downstairs moments later, "really white," recalled the housekeeper. When the housekeeper's sister asked him if he was OK, Bobby said that "Mary attacked me in the bath with scissors," she tells Newsweek. (More Kick Kennedy stories.)
