14-Year-Old to Play US Open

The field at this week's US Open will have a fresh face—very fresh. Andy Zhang, 14, will be the youngest competitor in the history of the tournament, the Golf Channel reports. Zhang was the second alternate, making the field after Paul Casey bowed out with an injury. "My mind just went blank" when I heard, Zhang tells Golf Week. "Then I said, 'Wait! What? I am in the US Open?"

Zhang is almost a full year younger than previous record-holder Tadd Fujikawa. Zhang was born in China, but his mother brought him to the US at age 10 to participate in tournaments. He currently goes to school in Florida. "There's zero pressure on him," his caddie says. "This kid is the best player I have ever seen at 14. He hits shots that pros can't hit." (More golf stories.)
