Wolves Kill Swedish Zookeeper

A zoo worker in Sweden has been mauled to death by a pack of wolves she had looked after since they were puppies. The 30-year-old woman was attacked by eight wolves after she entered the enclosure at Kolmarden Zoo to feed them, reports the Independent. Her body was recovered by rescue workers and zoo staff who formed a human chain to force the wolves back. She had worked at the zoo for about three years.

Kolmarden is Sweden's biggest zoo and it offers visitors the chance to have "wild encounters"—including petting wolves. It's not clear what led to the attack and zoo officials say no decision has been made on the animals' future. "It's very unusual for something like this to happen, but it has happened before," an expert in wolf behavior says. "Zoo animals aren't afraid of humans and accidents can happen." (More zoo stories.)
