New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras was sworn in as Greece's new prime minister today, after his conservative party reached a deal to form a coalition government with the liberal Pasok and Democratic Left parties, CNN reports. "We trust that with God's help we will do all we can to get our people out of the crisis," Samaras said at the ceremony, saying they would begin work tomorrow to bring "tangible hope" to the people. The three parties will control 179 of the 300 seats in Parliament, giving them a wide majority over Greece's Syriza party, which took second place in the weekend election.
The parties also announced that National Bank of Greece chairman Vasilios Rapanos will fill the all-important finance minister post, the Wall Street Journal reports. He'll meet with Samaras and outgoing finance minister Giorgos Zanias later today. But Zanias will still represent Greece at an upcoming eurozone meeting, which Pasok chief Evangelos Venizelos has hailed as "the first big battle on the revision of the bailout agreement," according to the AP.
