The younger brother of Gabriel Garcia Marquez says the Nobel laureate is suffering from dementia at age 85, reports the BBC. The author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera phones frequently to ask for help with basic daily tasks, says Jaime Garcia Marquez. "Sometimes I cry because I feel like I'm losing him."

While Garcia Marquez has stopped writing, the bright side is that he is doing well physically and "still has the humor, joy, and enthusiasm that he has always had," his brother told an audience in Colombia. The BBC notes that the 1967 classic One Hundred Years of Solitude opens with a family struggling to care for a senile grandfather. "It is a disease that runs in the family," says Jaime.
