Faced with an angry mob after he red-carded a soccer player, a Malaysian ref finally found an effective means of crowd control: He whipped out his gun,and fired a few rounds in the air. The part-time ref is also a cop, which might explain why he had a gun handy when several players rushed him, Reuters reports.
Five players are being detained and may face rioting charges, and the trigger-happy ref was brought in as well. "We are investigating whether the policeman was justified in taking out his firearm and discharging it," explained the chief, sagely adding, "and also why he had it with him during the match." The ref may be charged with misuse of firearms. (More Malaysia stories.)
