Comedian Dane Cook got the is-it-too-soon debate started only a week after the Dark Knight massacre in Colorado. Video obtained by the Daily Caller shows Cook telling a joke at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles: “I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like, 'Ugh f---ing shoot me.’” He drew a mix of groans and laughter. Early reaction is decidedly not in Cook's favor:

  • Tony Hicks, Contra Costa Times: "Yes, it's too soon. It may always be too soon. Especially for Dane Cook."
  • Jeff Labrecque, Entertainment Weekly: He likens the joke to a Gilbert Gottfried line about 9/11 three weeks after the attack. Gottfried recovered quickly, he writes. "Will Cook, who has a sitcom in the works at NBC, bounce back as quickly? Too soon!… to tell."
  • Lauren Lloyd, LAist: "The corners of our mouths have hit the floor."
  • Dane Cook: The comedian himself apologized on Twitter this afternoon, reports TMZ. "I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims."
