In an extremely un-Olympics move, a spectator hurled a beer bottle close to gold-medalist Usain Bolt yesterday just moments before the 100-meter final, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. As Bolt and the other runners crouched before the start, someone in the first row "shouted abuse" and tossed the bottle—which bounced behind the line of sprinters without injuring any of the athletes.

Bolt was unaware that it had happened, but American Justin Gatlin told the BBC that it caused him a "little distraction," adding: ”I didn’t know what it was. But when you’re in those blocks and the whole stadium’s quiet, you can hear a pin drop.” The bad fan was not identified, but he was busted, and is being held on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.
