At a campaign stop in Ohio last night, Mitt Romney turned up the heat on President Obama. Reflecting on Joe Biden's "chains" remark in Virginia, Romney told 5,000 listeners, "This is what an angry and desperate presidency looks like." He went on to call Obama's campaign a "disgrace," asserting that its strategy is "to smash America apart and then try to cobble together 51% of the pieces. If an American president wins that way, we all lose.”

Romney hammered Obama for trading "hope and change" for demonization and pandering. He urged the crowd to "ask one more person to join us who supported President Obama four years ago and didn’t get the change they deserved and they were promised," Romney said, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Obama campaign rejected the attacks, saying Romney's comments "seemed unhinged." So much for the substantive debate we were supposed to see following the Paul Ryan pick, the Washington Post notes. (More Mitt Romney stories.)
