Box office revenue sank to a pitiable low this weekend as the horror flick Possession held the top spot with a mere $9.5 million, says the Hollywood Reporter. Only the anti-Obama doc 2016: Obama's America made waves by breaking $26 million overall and becoming the second-most successful political documentary ever, after Fahrenheit 9/11 ($119.2 million). The first post-Labor Day weekend is usually slow, but the final numbers (due out tomorrow) could make it the worst since the weekend after 9/11.

Lawless held onto the No.2 spot ($6 million) while The Words, starring Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana, took third ($5 million) with a mostly-female audience. The Henry Cavill action film In the Cold Light of Day, budgeted at $20 million to $30 million, misfired with a bleak $1.8 million debut. It was the first post-Labor Day weekend since 2008 in which no film banked more than $10 million. (More box office stories.)
