Mitt Romney should have put a ring on it, because it was all the single ladies who helped President Obama win a second term. So says Meghan Daum in the LA Times, who writes that the president's focus on women's health issues and the like helped him nab 67% of the single-female vote. Considering that single women account for 55 million of eligible voters and comprise the "nation's fastest-growing voter bloc," it was a big deal indeed.
Of course, the matter is a double-edged sword for the women, Daum writes, because with political sway comes more opportunities to be stereotyped. For example, this viral video from Lena Dunham made some say the Girls creator was the voice of her peers, but "most young, single women don't have TV show and book deals any more than they are necessarily hip, urban professionals with roiling ambition, prodigious sex lives" and closets full of arty clothes. The demographic is more varied than that, and politicians should keep it in mind. "Art imitates life, but political reality doesn't live or die by HBO." Click for Daum's full column.
