All week pundits have been burying the GOP, insisting it must change to meet America's changing demographics or die. But not Charles Krauthammer. "The answer to Romney's failure is not retreat," he writes in the Washington Post. It is to "do conservatism, but do it better." Yes, the party needs to improve its standing with Hispanics, but it can do that with one policy change: It must support amnesty for illegal immigrants. "Yes, amnesty. Use the word. Shock and awe." In exchange, demand "full border enforcement."
Republicans don't need to worry about the other demographics Obama won—young people, blacks, and women—because those groups lean liberal. "The country doesn't need two liberal parties. Yes, Republicans need to weed out candidates who talk like morons about rape," but it doesn't need to become pro-choice either; plenty of women aren't. Similarly, the core Republican argument for smaller government remains sound, the party just needs to make it more effectively—and up-and-coming leaders will. "Republicans: No whimpering. No whining. No reinvention when none is needed." Read his full column here. (More Charles Krauthammer stories.)
