Paula Broadwell's computer was packed with classified material that should have been better safeguarded, officials tell Reuters. David Petraeus' former mistress had access to such information thanks to her position as a reserve officer in military intelligence, the sources say, noting that the amount of sensitive data calls for further investigation—into what the material contains and exactly how she got it. A probe is also looking into whether she managed the data in accordance with official rules. Either way, Broadwell has had her security clearance suspended, as has Florida socialite Jill Kelley, the BBC reports.

Kelley will still be able to enter the military base where she organized events, but she'll have to enter via the visitors' center. Meanwhile, House Judiciary Committee head Lamar Smith has written to FBI boss Robert Mueller to find out if Petraeus faces a criminal probe and to seek a timeline in the case. As to whether President Obama should have been alerted earlier to the investigation: That's "the quintessential judgment call for an attorney general," says an official. The president should be informed "only where it is important for the performance of the president's duties and where appropriate from a law enforcement perspective," according to guidance from then-Attorney General Michael Mukasey in 2007.
