Benghazi Security Chief Killed by Gunmen: Libya

Libya's deputy interior minister says gunmen assassinated Benghazi's security chief overnight. Col. Farag al-Dersi was shot dead while returning from work. "Three men opened fire, killed him, and then fled the scene," says the minister, adding that it was unclear who is behind the killing. The country's second largest city has witnessed a series of assassinations and car bombs over the past months by unidentified assailants targeting mainly security officials who worked under the rule of ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi. But the New York Times says that in recent days the focus has shifted, with attacks more often striking "symbols of the fledgling state and its allies." (More Libya stories.)
