Lord Justice Brian Leveson's long-awaited report on the various scandals surrounding News of the World and other British tabloids finally hit today, and it absolutely savages Rupert Murdoch's newspapers and the British press in general. The press, Leveson writes, has "wreaked havoc in the lives of innocent people" for decades, and forged a "damaging" relationship with politicians, the BBC reports. At News of the World in particular, there was "a general lack of respect of individual privacy and dignity."

Leveson is calling for the press to create a new self-regulatory body, saying that the Press Complaints Commission "failed" and that enforcing current press laws wouldn't do the job, the Telegraph reports. "Putting a policeman in every newsroom is no sort of answer," Leveson said. The report's impact could extend beyond Britain: Lawmakers here will pore over the report for indications that News Corp. broke US laws, NBC reports. (More Leveson Inquiry stories.)
