Celebrity TV shrink Dr. Phil has canceled an interview with Britney Spears' parents, but the reasons are hotly debated. The host says he called off the sit-down because the situation is "too intense" right now, but the Spears family insists they cut him off after he visited Britney in the psych ward last week and spoke publicly about her mental state.

As soon as Brit's dad "realized Dr. Phil was making public statements about Britney, he got angry," said a source. "He started calling everybody in the family, telling them not to cooperate." The doc refused to apologize, saying: "Somebody needs to get this young woman into quality care." Spears lost custody of her sons after she locked herself in a room with the toddlers in an hours-long standoff with police, who later rushed her to a hospital. (More Britney Spears stories.)
