Well, this is embarrassing: The British hospital treating Kate Middleton admitted it was victimized by a crank call in which information on the Duchess of Cambridge's condition was given to a woman impersonating Queen Elizabeth II. An Australian radio station made a hoax call to King Edward VII's Hospital in the early hours yesterday, using the oft-mimicked voice of the monarch to ask after Middleton's health. Not only were the pranksters put through, they were told that Kate, who is being treated for morning sickness, "hasn't had any retching with me and she's been sleeping on and off."
The red-faced hospital is blasting the call as "a foolish prank call that we all deplore," notes the BBC, and the Aussie radio station itself "sincerely apologizes," though it marvels that the call was actually put through. "We thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents," say DJs Mel Grieg and Michael Christian in a statement. The hospital says its telephone protocols are, unsurprisingly, being reviewed. A royal spokesman had no comment. (More Kate Middleton stories.)
