Rapists Tried to Run Over Victim: India Police

Indian police tomorrow plan to present a 1,000-page document detailing the charges against the six men accused of gang-raping a now deceased 23-year-old on a moving bus, and the fresh details that are leaking out about the crime are no less horrific than what we already know. Police say the rapists tried to run the woman over after dumping her on the side of the road; her boyfriend, who was also beaten, pulled her out of the vehicle's path. In her bid to protect herself, the woman bit three of her attackers; those injuries, along with blood, semen, and hair samples, will be used at trial, reports the AFP. The driver also allegedly tried to eliminate evidence of the crime by washing the bus and torching the clothes taken from the woman. Other developments:

• The sixth suspect in the attack is undergoing bone testing to verify his age—police believe he may be 17, which would mean he'd be tried as a juvenile.
• Lawyers in the area of Delhi where the trial will be held said today that they would not defend the suspects because it would be "immoral." The government will have to appoint lawyers.
• The Guardian reports that the woman's ashes were scattered on the Ganges yesterday.
• The paper adds that in the wake of the crime, hundreds of Delhi women have applied for gun licenses.
• Meanwhile, an education minister wants the victim's name to be released—so that a potential new anti-rape law can be named after her. "She was a human being with a name, not just a symbol," he tweeted yesterday, reports the BBC.
