Miss New York tap-danced her way through a James Brown classic on her way to grabbing the Miss America crown last night. Mallory Hytes Hagan is a 23-year-old Brooklynite who the AP notes "deftly" answered a question about gun control, and will make her platform child sexual abuse, an issue she says "rippled through" several members of her own family, including her mother. "As a teen I lost my mom kind of for a couple years," she said. "She was dealing with her own issues, and that's something that now as an adult I understand, but then I certainly did not."
Asked if schools should hire armed guards, Hytes Hagan responded: "I don't think the proper way to fight violence is with violence," she replied. "I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period." Hytes Hagan ends something of a dry spell for New York, which hasn't seen a winner since Vanessa Williams' ill-fated win in 1984. (More Miss America stories.)
