Walmart is set to make a pretty bold hiring announcement today: It plans to employ every veteran looking for work. The statement does, however, come with an asterisk—veterans must have left the military within the past 12 months and not have been dishonorably discharged. Still, the five-year plan, which officially kicks off on Memorial Day, should see 100,000 former members of the armed services hired, reports the New York Times.
That could make a dent in an unemployment rate among vets that has been stuck well above the national average; for 2012, it hovered just below 10%. Veterans-champion Michelle Obama praised this "historic" move, saying, "Walmart is setting a groundbreaking example for the private sector to follow." (More Walmart stories.)
