Wayne LaPierre has got to be feeling a little like he had a bulls-eye on his forehead during this morning's turn on Fox News Sunday, reports Politico. With Mark Kelly renewing his call for stricter gun control, LaPierre even took heat from Fox's Chris Wallace, who blasted LaPierre's contention that American children face the same dangers as President Obama's daughters as "ridiculous." "Tell that to the people in Newtown," responded the NRA chief. LaPierre also took aim at universal background checks, saying, "it's a fraud to call it universal. The criminals are never going to comply." Over at ABC, Paul Krugman chimed in, calling the NRA "an insane organization." “They have this vision that we're living in a Mad Max movie and that nothing can be done about it, that America cannot manage unless everybody's prepared to shoot intruders." More from the Sunday dial, as per Politico:

  • Leon Panetta on Zero Dark Thirty and enhanced interrogation: “First of all, it's a movie. The real story is that in order to put the puzzle of intelligence together that led us to bin Laden, there was a lot of intelligence. Yes, some of it came from some of the tactics that were used at that time, interrogation tactics that were used. But the fact is we put together most of that intelligence without having to resort to that.”
  • Robert Gibbs on Chuck Hagel: “The disconcerting thing, obviously, for anybody that watched it was he seemed unimpressive and unprepared on the questions that, quite frankly, he knew was coming."
  • Harry Reid on Hagel: “This was eight hours. Give the guy a break, I thought he did pretty good.”
  • Reid on wanting to "get something done on guns": "I've been supported by the NRA on occasion. I know Wayne LaPierre, he's always been extremely pleasant to me. So I am not here to demean the organization. Just because they resist, it doesn't mean we can't do things. We have a lot of special interest groups that come and complain about things. We’ll listen to them and make the right decision.”
  • Reid on immigration reform: "It's certainly gonna pass the Senate. And it would be a bad day for our country and a bad day for the Republican Party if they continue standing in the way of this."
  • Panetta on Hillary Clinton vs. Joe Biden in 2016: “I've worked with both of them. You know, if they make the decision that they want to be commander in chief, I think they're both qualified to do it."
