Sweethearts are a venerable, traditional Valentine's Day candy that every American alive has at some point pretended to enjoy eating. But while the powdery little hearts themselves haven't changed much over the years, the pithy statements adorning them sure have. To keep up with the times, NECCO continually refreshes the messages—this year's hearts, for instance, bear such modern, relevant phrases as "UR HOT," "TEXT ME," and "LOML" (aka Love of My Life).

To add those in, some slogans have to rotate out. The company sent the Atlantic a list of notable retirees. Some of our favorites:

  • YOU ARE GAY
  • HEP CAT
  • YEAH RIGHT
  • SAUCY BOY
  • HOT CHA
  • YOU ARE LATE
  • LET'S READ
  • GROOVY
  • FAX ME
No, we didn't make any of those up. Yes, FAX ME. Has anyone ever faxed anyone to set up a date? For that matter, was reading once considered a romantic activity? Anyway, for the full list, check the source. (More Sweethearts stories.)
