Stephen Colbert—the person, not the Comedy Central character—hosted a fundraiser for sister Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, who is running for Congress in South Carolina, over the weekend. Mediaite spotted video from the otherwise "relatively private" bowling alley event, in which Colbert offered a touching introduction of the sister he calls "Lulu." Highlights:

  • "That guy that I play, he talks about politics all the time, and he has stuck his toe in the waters of American politics, and occasionally his finger in the eye of American politics. But I have actually never supported any candidate before. Now, obviously, Lulu is my sister, and if I did not support her my mother would be very mad. But I can wholeheartedly support Lulu not just from a brother's love ... The real reason I can support Lulu is how much I admire her and what she has done with her life."

  • South Carolina would be lucky to have her "not just because she is hard-working and talented and intelligent and dedicated ... because she's sane! I love South Carolina, but we're a crazy state," Colbert said, citing as evidence the "the jaw-dropping fact that it is possible that Lulu's opponent will be the former governor of the Appalachian Trail."
Indeed, former Gov. Mark Sanford appears to be the Republican frontrunner, Slate notes. (More Elizabeth Colbert Busch stories.)
