On Jan. 24 of last year, Melissa Dohme, then 20, was stabbed 32 times by an ex-boyfriend. Little did she know then that Cameron Hill, a firefighter-paramedic who responded to the 911 call, would turn out to be her new love. "I don't know why, but I knew I'd see her again," the 38-year-old Florida man tells the Tampa Bay Times. "I believed she would live." She did, though she flatlined four times, suffered a stroke and other complications, and spent three weeks in the hospital. She finally reconnected with Hill in October, and "was weirdly giddy," she recalls. "I had this feeling about him."

In the meantime, Dohme had continued her schooling to become a nurse, traveled abroad, and spoke out against domestic violence at high schools, colleges, and churches. When she finally met Hill, they immediately hit it off and talked for hours. They both felt a connection, but "it was a confusing time," Hill remembers. "I couldn't ignore the feelings," but he wasn't sure how to proceed with someone whose life he had helped save. Finally, after attending her college graduation, Hill asked Dohme out. Soon they were inseparable, and Hill was by Dohme's side when the court case against her ex-boyfriend began. "When I look back on that night, I can't think of it as all bad anymore because I met Cameron," Dohme says. "He's the one I've been waiting for. My fairy tale." (More Melissa Dohme stories.)
