ACORN Worker Gets $100K, but Still No Story Correction?

James O'Keefe may be paying $100,000 to an ACORN employee who got fired after an O'Keefe video portrayed him as a would-be sex trafficker, but Conor Friedersdorf at the Atlantic points out that you wouldn't know it from looking at Breitbart.com. The original story is still posted, without apology, correction, or clarification. Turns out that the employee called police immediately after O'Keefe, dressed as a pimp, left. The settlement doesn't require O'Keefe to admit wrongdoing, but Friedersdorf thinks the site should correct the record. All of which reminds him of another story on the website, this one about LBJ and Barry Goldwater. Its third paragraph:

• "Journalists on the campaign trail saw Johnson drunkenly board a plane armed with nuclear weapons and then accidentally drop them on the United States. Luckily, by the grace of God, they did not go off. None of this was reported, while newspapers editors worked in overdrive to portray Goldwater as eager to push the button."

Spectacular, writes Friedersdorf. "It isn't just that it appears without attribution, as if the reader should accept such an anecdote without citation. What's so priceless is that, even in a scenario where it improbably proved to be true, a writer and editor would still have just slipped it into the article as a casual aside, quietly achieving the biggest buried lede in history."
