A medical breakthrough from Turkey: The world's first recipient of a womb from a dead donor has become pregnant and appears to be healthy, Sky News reports. Derya Sert, 22, was born without a uterus and deemed a "medical miracle" when she received her transplant in 2011. Eighteen months later, when the uterus seemed to be working, doctors implanted the embryo. They plan to deliver the baby by Caesarean and pull out the womb a few months later, to avoid the risk of rejection or further complications.
Experts say Sert and her baby are both at risk, partly because immuno-suppressive drugs and premature delivery could cause birth defects. But her husband Mustafa sounds positive, reports Yahoo: "We were happy after the transplant," he said. "With God’s help we will have a baby thanks to this process." A woman in Saudi Arabia received the first womb transplant, this one from a living donor, but it failed and was removed 99 days later.
