The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 shocked the competition this weekend with a surprise win at the box office, the LA Times reports. The story about America's first black major league ballplayer bowed to $27.3 million, well ahead of pre-release polling and the other new debut film, Scary Movie 5 ($15.2 million). Moviegoers also gave 42 an unusual A+ grade with CinemaScore—a perfect rating. Rounding out the top five were The Croods ($13.2 million), GI Joe: Retaliation ($10.8 million), and Evil Dead ($9.5 million), says the Hollywood Reporter. (More box office stories.)
