A Pakistani court has called for the arrest of former leader Pervez Musharraf—and what followed is what the AP describes as a "dramatic scene." Musharraf was in court seeking bail when the order, tied to the house arrest of judges in 2007, was issued. In such cases, a suspect is usually handcuffed in court, the BBC reports. But Musharraf's security team pushed him past policemen; he jumped into a black SUV and escaped as a member of his security team hung to the side of the vehicle. He sped away to his large compound on the outskirts of Islamabad, which is protected by high walls, razor wire, and guard towers.
Lawyers reportedly shouted, "Look who is running, Musharraf is running!" Police didn't immediately seek to detain him, Reuters notes, and the AP adds that many of the policemen and paramilitary soldiers at the court did not seem to try to prevent Musharraf from leaving. Musharraf is accused of treason after his 2007 firing of judges and declaration of emergency powers, which opponents say was unconstitutional.
