Tom Cruise's sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion outperformed expectations to win the box office in its opening weekend, beaming up $38.2 million domestically, the LA Times reports. It's an especially big win for Cruise, given the film is not part of a franchise like Mission Impossible, and his last two flicks—Jack Reacher and Rock of Ages—both performed poorly. Jackie Robinson biopic 42 slid into second place with a respectable second-week return of $18 million, followed by The Croods ($9.5 million), Scary Movie 5 ($6.3 million), and GI Joe: Retaliation ($5.8 million), says the Hollywood Reporter.
