President Obama spotted a familiar face from the US on the final day of his three-nation African tour—George W. Bush. In a rare joint appearance, the president and his Republican predecessor laid a wreath at a memorial for the Americans killed in the 1998 embassy bombing in Tanzania, the AP reports. Bush happened to be in town for a George W. Bush Institute summit on African women.

Michelle Obama and Laura Bush appeared together on a panel at the Bush conference. Before the meeting, Obama praised his predecessor for saving millions of lives with funding for AIDS treatment. "I'm looking forward to being able, on African soil, to once again thank him on behalf of the American people for showing how American generosity and foresight could end up making a real difference in people's lives," he said yesterday.
