Jack Lew has stern words for Republicans looking to pick a new fight this fall over raising the debt ceiling: Don't even think about it. "Congress can't let us default," the Treasury secretary said today, adding that the White House has been "crystal clear" that the subject isn't up for negotiation. "I certainly hope that Congress isn't looking to create confrontations and false crises because we did see, in 2011, how bad that is for the American economy," Lew said, as per Politico. Further across-the-board cuts are "unacceptable. (President Obama) won't sign that." More from your Sunday dial:

  • Glenn Greenwald on Director of National Intelligence James Clapper: "It's amazing that he not only hasn't been prosecuted, but still has his job. And what that does is it lets national security officials continue to lie to the public." Clapper was "caught red-handed lying to the American Congress."
  • Greenwald on a coming report on low-level NSA spying: "There are legal constraints for how you can spy on Americans. But these systems allow analysts to listen to whatever emails they want, whatever telephone calls, browsing history, Microsoft Word documents. It's an incredibly powerful and invasive tool."
  • Pete King on Rand Paul and the NSA: “When you have Rand Paul actually comparing (Edward) Snowden to Martin Luther King or Henry David Thoreau, this is madness, this is the anti-war Democrats in the 1960s that destroyed their party for almost 15 years. I don't want that happening to our party."
  • Dianne Feinstein on Russia and Snowden: “I suspect this sort of temporary amnesty or refugee status is to give Russia time to really consider what's in their best interests. And I think, if they think about it hard, what Snowden did, it's not in their best interests. Putin knows this. He's run the KGB, he knows what intelligence is comprised of.”
  • Feinstein on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner: “I think he should (resign). Of all people, Bob Filner knows what public life is like, he served a time in the House. It's a very tough job, and I don't think that somebody who is lacking a moral compass really sets a role model or really will provide the kind of leadership that San Diegans want. I suspect there will be (a recall election) and the people will judge."
  • Lew on the 'Loop': "I have been working on my handwriting for many decades. And I obviously still have some more work to do. I will confess to having a certain challenge with penmanship. And I always do my best."
