The San Diego Sheriff's Department has issued a warning to keep away from a blue, four-door Nissan Versa that appears abandoned: It may be rigged with explosives. This is the latest in a multi-state manhunt for James DiMaggio, accused of murdering a female friend in California and abducting one or two of her children. Police say he liked hiking and camping, and could be "hunkered down" in a West Coast rural area anywhere between Mexico and Canada. In other developments:

  • DiMaggio was very close to the family whose lives have been upended. "He basically became part of our family," said Brett Anderson, the husband. "I can't fathom what happened in Jim's head. He obviously just lost it."
  • DiMaggio's ex-wife doubts he was having an affair with Brett's wife, Christina Anderson, whose remains were found in DiMaggio's burning home Sunday. It was a "brother-sister type of deal," she said.
  • The ex-wife, who asked to remain anonymous, said DiMaggio was "nerdy" rather than violent during their 6-month marriage. "I would complain about the virtual reality game he would play all night. It was ridiculous."
