Politics / liberals Liberals Set to Bash Bush to Finish Line $8.5M campaign aiming to keep president's approval ratings in the toilet By Michael O'Connor, Newser User Posted Jan 24, 2008 7:34 PM CST Copied President Bush waves on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, after getting off the Marine One helicopter after a day trip to Frederick, Md. (AP Photo/Lawrence Jackson) (Associated Press) A liberal advocacy group plans to spend $8.5 million to keep President Bush's approval rating low, the AP reports. Americans United for Change will focus on what it perceives as Bush's failures in Iraq and at home, a move the group hopes will benefit Democrats in the upcoming election while preventing a repeat of Ronald Reagan's 21% end-of-term approval bounce. The first television ad of the yearlong campaign will air before Bush's State of the Union address Monday. Republicans call the effort a waste of time. "Why would liberals want to spend good money re-fighting the battles they lost yesterday?" asked one spokesman. The nonprofit corporation first caused a stir with its 2005 ads that opposed Bush's Social Security plan. (More liberals stories.) Report an error
