JonBenet Ramsey's 1996 death remains in the spotlight. A Boulder Daily Camera exclusive published in January revealed the grand jury had in 1999 voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey (the charge: child abuse resulting in death), but then-DA Alex Hunter refused to sign the indictment. Now, Camera reporter Charlie Brennan is suing current DA Stan Garnett for the indictment's release, the paper reports. The move comes after Brennan, alongside the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, had two requests that it be made public denied.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday argues "the indictment is a criminal justice record that reflects official action by the grand jury, and accordingly that it is subject to mandatory disclosure upon request. Alternatively ... the indictment should be disclosed to the public because such disclosure would serve the public interest in government transparency." Garnett's response: "Protecting the integrity of the grand jury process is important to every district attorney. We will respond to the motion in a pleading in court."
