Liz Cheney Courts Controversy in Wyoming

Liz Cheney and her 2014 Senate seat opponent Mike Enzi may both be conservative Republicans in Wyoming, but there's one thing they don't have in common. In the months since Cheney announced her candidacy, she has managed to court more controversy than Enzi has in his entire 40-year political career, the LA Times reports. Over the past two-and-a-half months, Cheney was late paying a tax bill, got caught receiving an illegitimate fishing license, butted heads with her sister over same-sex marriage, and publicly cheered the death of the newspaper industry.

Silly as it may seem, the fishing license scandal is actually particularly telling, notes the Times. The problem was that Cheney received the license after only 72 days of living in Wyoming, while the law requires 365. This speaks to a larger issue: Though father Dick Cheney was born, raised, and served in Wyoming, Liz Cheney mainly lived there as a kid, leaving as a teenager and only returning recently. Enzi, meanwhile, has served three terms in office, and Wyoming voters know and like him. "How can (Cheney) know what's right and wrong for the state if she hasn't lived here the last 20 years?" says one local. "I really think she's running off her father's name." (More Wyoming stories.)
