Some 500 Afghan women, many wearing burqas, assembled in an extremely rare mass protest in Kandahar to protest the kidnapping of American aid worker Cyd Mizell. "Her kidnapping is against our culture and tradition," said the director of the women's organization in Kandahar. Some of the women had obtained permission from their husbands to attend the rally.

Mizell and her Afghan driver were kidnapped Saturday from a residential neighborhood in Kandahar, one of the country's most dangerous cities. No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the disappearance. A Taliban spokesman reiterated he could neither confirm or deny its involvement. Mizell is the first American woman kidnapped in Afghanistan. (More Afghanistan stories.)
