The Detroit teenager killed by a homeowner after a late-night car accident was shot in the face, not the back, an autopsy has confirmed. The family of Renisha McBride, 19, says she was seeking help after the crash when she was killed by a man in the suburb of Dearborn Heights. The homeowner's lawyer says the shooting was justified after the man heard what sounded like "a person or persons" trying to get into his home, the Detroit News reports. Her client, however, apparently told police the shooting—which the autopsy shows was not at close range—was accidental.
McBride, a Ford employee, hit a parked car more than two hours before the shooting. A lawyer for the family tells the Detroit Free Press he has been told McBride was confused and bleeding after the crash, told witnesses she wanted to go home, and wandered down the street. A neighbor tried to find her but was not successful. The shooting, which the teenager's family say was the result of racial profiling, has attracted nationwide attention from civil rights leaders.
