The former boss of the Gambino crime family was stabbed Sunday night, but he claims he was doing something heroic, not criminal, at the time. Law enforcement sources tell the New York Daily News that John Gotti Jr. says he was trying to break up a fight in the parking lot of a CVS in Long Island when he was stabbed in the stomach. But an investigator says Gotti "wasn't very cooperative" when police, alerted by hospital staff due to the type of injury, questioned him. Now the Nassau County Police Department and the Nassau County District Attorney's office are investigating.
The law enforcement source says he's not so sure Gotti's telling the truth: "It’s hard to believe he would break up a fight between two strangers." And store employees tell CBS 2 they didn't notice anything going on in the parking lot and found no evidence, including on surveillance video, proving Gotti's story. Gotti's lawyer says he heard Gotti, who quit the mob in 1999 and reportedly now manages real estate properties on Long Island, is home and doing OK. (More John Gotti Jr. stories.)
