Two children have died after they were trapped in a car that veered off a suburban Minneapolis highway ramp and became submerged in a storm water pond. Five children, ages 1 to 7, were pulled out of the car after it was towed from the water yesterday in St. Louis Park. The 23-year-old driver, who was also the mother of three of the children, escaped from the car and screamed for help. Passers-by tried to help, but the car was by then submerged in 8 to 9 feet of what a state patrolman described as "incredibly cold, nearly freezing-temperature water."

Rescuers pulled the first child from the car about 25 minutes after getting the call; by the time the last had been extracted, that child had been underwater for 45 minutes. Zenavia Rennie, 5, and Alarious Coleman-Guerrido, 7, died last night, according to authorities. The three other children, Amani Coleman-Guerrido, 5, Aliyana Rennie, 1, and Zarihana Rennie, 6, remained hospitalized in critical condition. The driver, Marion Guerrido, reportedly did not have a valid driver's license. Officials still aren't sure what caused the accident. (More car accident stories.)
