Looks like there are some short memories on the US Olympic Committee: Not much more than a year after news that Team USA uniforms were made in China had lawmakers like Harry Reid suggesting they be torched in a bonfire, the USOC is raising money by selling mittens that say "Go USA" on the outside and "Made in China" on the inside, the AP reports.
A USOC spokesman says that while the official mittens athletes will wear at the opening ceremony in Sochi were made in the USA—and are available to the public for $98 a pair—it decided on a cheaper option for its fundraising, and has already raised $500,000 with the sale of mittens at $14 a pair. "We wanted to create a fundraising opportunity where almost anyone could support Team USA," a spokesman says. The USOC got the idea from Canada, where the sale of "Go Canada" mittens raised $14 million for the country's Olympic team in 2010. Those mittens were also made in China.
