Parents in Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, say a police officer shot and killed their 18-year-old son without good reason—after declaring, "We don't have time for this." Mark Wilsey tells WECT the family called police for help when son Keith Vidal started having a schizophrenic incident, and was holding a small screwdriver in his hand. He says officers tased Keith and got him on the ground, and then the officer in question allegedly shot in between the officers holding Vidal, killing the 90-pound high school student. The family alleges that the screwdriver was the reason for the shooting, but they insist it was small and couldn't have harmed anybody.

Official records show that the first unit to appear on the scene reported a confrontation but told dispatchers everything was under control; a Southport Police Department unit arrived 14 minutes later, and 70 seconds after arriving, the officer reported that he fired in self-defense. The Boiling Spring Lakes police chief and the Brunswick County sheriff have cleared their officers, the first two to arrive on the scene, and Wilsey praised both of those officers to the Wilmington Star News, saying they kept the situation calm and under control. The officer who allegedly fired on Vidal was the third to arrive on the scene, from the Southport PD, and the family accuses him of escalating the situation unnecessarily, causing Vidal to flee before being tased and ultimately shot. The district attorney's office is investigating, and Vidal's family has hired lawyers; the officer involved is on paid administrative leave and has also hired a lawyer.
