A suicide bomber killed at least 12 in the main train station of Sri Lankan capital Colombo today, AFP reports, in the latest round of violence on the eve of the country's 60th anniversary of independence from Britain. More than 100 were wounded in the attack, believed to be the work of the Tamil Tigers, and the Sri Lankan government has boosted security in anticipation of further bloodshed.

"The bombing has all the hallmarks of the Tigers," said a police officer at the train station. No one has claimed responsibility, which is standard for the separatist group. Earlier in the day, a grenade attack wounded six people in the country’s main zoo. And yesterday, a bomb ripped through a bus in Dambulla, killing 20 and wounding 68.
