NBC Miami has a tale of a hero parrot credited with saving the lives of a Fort Lauderdale couple who were sound asleep during a house fire. "What we heard was a screeching like we've never heard before," Laurajean Niesel tells the Sun-Sentinel. "We thought maybe he got his foot caught in his trapeze." But no, 3-year-old Pearly was squawking to let them know the house was filling up with smoke. They called 911, and firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the laundry room. The going reward these days for a life-saving parrot? One apple. (More parrot stories.)
