A Today show interview featuring Kate Gosselin and her two oldest kids got awkward very quickly yesterday when Cara and Mady, now 13, immediately clammed up. Mady answered the very first question with "Ummmm..." and a long silence, leading an apparently irritated Kate to interject, "Mady. Your words. It's your chance. Spit it out." Cara then "answered" her first question by simply staring at her mom, who said, "So this is their chance to talk, this is the most wordless I’ve heard them all morning." The awkwardness continued from there (though Mady managed to get a few sentences out eventually), and a source says Kate did not react well backstage after the interview.

"She went type-A crazy," a source tells the New York Daily News. "She was upset that they had a chance to speak for themselves and defend her and they blew it. She told them, 'You embarrassed mommy,' and some people heard. She was not happy." Publicly, however, she put on a cheerier face, tweeting, "1st live interview can render even the gabbiest girls speechless :)" and "I'm SO proud of my girls...we had a great trip to NYC together." She claims the girls asked to do the interview with her. Ex-husband Jon, of course, chimed in, telling Inside Edition (per RumorFix), "They’re minors … You put our kids into a situation that they were not prepared for at all. They weren’t allowed to be themselves." (He also complained recently about the "militant household" Kate runs.)
