Conservative Sen. David Vitter announced today what pretty much everyone in Louisiana already knew: He's running for governor in next year's election, reports Roll Call. Bobby Jindal can't run again because of term limits, and Vitter "stands a pretty decent (if not better) chance of winning," writes Sean Sullivan at the Washington Post. That's not bad for a guy who had to publicly apologize after his name turned up in the little black book of the "DC Madam" in 2007, notes Sullivan.
Vitter has kept a relatively low profile since the scandal, though he raised it in recent months to push the so-called "Vitter amendment," which would eliminate federal subsidies for Capitol Hill staffers, reports Politico. Most observers felt it was a deliberate move to burnish his conservative credentials ahead of a gubernatorial run, notes Roll Call. Vitter does not have to resign as senator to run, reports the AP.
