US Must Regain Principles, Says Former Gitmo Prisoner

On YouTube, Adel Hassan Hamad is the face of the anti-Guantanamo movement, the subject of two much-watched videos. In December, the innocent Sudanese aid worker was finally released, the Christian Science Monitor reports, and though he is suing for the five years he spent in captivity, he says he's not bitter. “We just want to respect America again,” he says.

Hamad says he underwent torture, beatings and “every unimaginable transgression” in the prison, but also saw glimpses of American kindness, and he’s hoping his lawsuit helps spread his message. “The American people need to return to the great concepts established by the Founding Fathers,” he says. “All these values and even the justice system are being shaken, played with.” (More Guantanamo Bay stories.)
