Afghan Prison Is as Bad as Gitmo

The U.S. prison at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan is as bad as Guantanamo, reports Eliza Griswold in the New Republic. Prisoners are kept in barbed-wire cages, beaten, tortured, raped, and held without promise of trial. But unlike Gitmo, Bagram has no visiting congressional delegations.

Two high-profile habeas corpus cases pleaded in D.C. last month may be drawing international attention to the situation at the prison, Griswold reports. "The nightmare in Guantanamo is something of a picnic compared to Bagram," sayd Eric Lewis, co-counsel in one of the cases. "In Cuba the whole world is watching.
