The superheroes are back again in X-Men: Days of Future Past and boy, do they impress as they time-travel back to the 1970s. Critics are throwing the film a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, and audiences are even more generous. So what's there to love about this latest, star-studded X-Men?
- As Tom Long writes for the Detroit News, it's "a special-effects-saturated, good-humored, action-stuffed summer movie spectacle filled with colorful fantasy characters doing on-screen magic tricks in the service of escapist entertainment." As for logic: "Who cares?"
- "Ambitious, even audacious, the movie's mix of action and for-devotees-only intrigue can overwhelm, but there are moments of sheer virtuosity, too," Steven Rea writes at the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Either you get this stuff, or you don't. But it's nice to see flashes of humor popping up," he says, noting there are plenty of witty details.
- "What elevates this film above most of its predecessors is the dynamic action filmmaking and, above all, its wit," writes Peter Rainer at the Christian Science Monitor. He agrees with Long. The "ins and outs of the time-travel scenario" are hard to follow, but "it doesn't really matter. It’s enough that the movie is fun."
- The movie's success owes to its characters and the actors playing them, writes AO Scott at the New York Times. They "step unto the breach to provide just enough wit and feeling to make Days of Future Past something other than a waste of a reasonable person’s time."
